Information
Although self-installation of a Sky minidish in an urban location is generally a straightforward process just point the dish in the approximate direction of those on nearby dwellings, and use a signal meter (possibly the receivers own) for fine tuning doing the job professionally is a bit more involved.

In any case, there might not be another reference dish in visible range, or a satellite other than Astra might be required. Professional installers will use a compass to identify South. When the time comes to install the dish they will use the compass for azimuth alignment and another instrument known as an inclinometer to adjust and confi rm dish elevation. This device, which can be as simple as a protractor and plumbob, is held against the frame of the dish/mount and the angle read off a scale. Its rather more accurate than the elevation scale that some manufacturers stamp onto their mounts (note that the dishs off set angle needs to factored in when using an inclinometer).

Essential riggers tool

An inclinometer is also essential equipment for the rather involved process that is the installation of a motorised dish, not least because its the only accurate means of monitoring elevation angles here. Serving both needs is SACs heavy-duty NS1620, which builds both inclinometer and compass into a solid aluminium casting. These consist of fl uid-damped discs mounted on jewelled bearings.

Both can be read from scales visible from the top of the unit. However, at either end of the device are viewfinders with hairline pointers that allow more precise readings to be obtained. Its a pity that these eyepieces lack a switchable LED backlight, as their ease of readability ultimately depends on ambient light levels.

One of the sides which are flat, easing the positioning of the device against the metalwork of a dish mount when using the inclinometer incorporates a handy ruler. The NS1620 worked well in practice, and could prove to be an essential dish-riggers tool Martin Pipe
